CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Carter

3 months to go.

“Where are we going?” Seleste asks as I drive one of the trucks up the ramp and south towards Key West.

“I told you. It’s a secret.”

“Carter Lewis, are you taking me on a date?”

“Well, I hadn’t thought of it like that, but now you mention it, yeah. It could be kinda like a date. I have a little surprise up my sleeve first, then I’m going to take my girl to dinner.”

She sinks into her seat with a childlike smile on her face, before a shadow falls across it. “Does anyone know?”

“Only Isaac. Everyone else thinks we’re going to check out some dance places, to get some ideas for things we can offer our guests.”

I can hear her sigh with relief, then we drive down the highway in comfortable silence, my hand resting on her thigh, her fingers stroking the length of mine. My heart swells, to my surprise. I never went in for romance, PDAs, obvious ‘togetherness’, it all felt a bit smug and unsavory. But this, right now, this ease of being with the scorching hot woman beside me, our skin touching at every possible moment sending long, comforting waves of completeness through me, makes me understand fully why other couples behave the way they do. Her touch grounds me, her gaze turns me on, her mind blows mine. The only other feeling I have is one of pain, rooted in the fact I want everyone to know she’s mine, yet no one ever will. I push that thought away, like always. The days are flying by with narrowed eyes and wagging fingers, and three months have already passed. We’re halfway down the track but my heart is already over the finish line. I need to keep something of her, while I can, so I have something to hold onto when she’s gone. And when I turn the corner into the parking lot and pull up in front of the flickering neon sign, Seleste knows instantly what that ‘something’ is going to be.

“You’re getting a tattoo?”

I grin, wickedly.

She throws her head towards me with a mock glare. “Like, where? You have no free skin left.”

“Yeah I do,” I say, pressing a finger to my sternum. “Right here.”

Her mouth falls open. “What are you going to get?”

I pause and take a deep breath. I haven’t really thought about what her reaction to this will be. And now I’m about to tell her, I’m a little scared she’s going to try and talk me out of it. I know I haven’t imagined her feelings for me. The way she moans my name in her sleep and clenches her muscles around my cock, my fingers and my tongue tell me the raw, unfiltered truth about how she feels. But I know she’s getting nervous about Rodriguez, especially after Bianchi’s visit, and she may think that me getting a tattoo to remind me of her is taking the risk of discovery and certain death a step too far.

“Pandora,” I say, watching for her reaction.
